suspended in the empty city

A compelling photograph distinguished by its bold use of shadow and the precision with which figures emerge from the illuminated areas. The broad expanses of darkness lend the human silhouettes a particular intensity, as though they were fleeting apparitions within the urban fabric. The result is a spare, cinematic image that evokes anticipation and a sense of suspended time.

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE WORK

A distinctive photographic voice

This selection reveals a photographer attentive to the power of faces, the vitality of gestures and the expressive possibilities of light. Carlos Lopes Franco shows a particular sensitivity to the relationship between people and their surroundings: walls, staircases, squares and architecture become part of the story, enriching its meaning.

Black and white gives the collection coherence while taking on different qualities according to the subject: incisive in the portraits, spare in the urban scenes and delicate in the landscape. His ability to move between quiet, contemplative images and photographs alive with immediate energy is especially striking, underpinned throughout by a clear eye for composition.

What emerges is a humane, expressive and distinctive photographic vision that invites careful observation and leaves room for interpretation. This is work of considerable visual sensitivity, capable of transforming encounters and places into images that linger in the memory.
