The Home Page as an Editorial Space

The full-width photograph functions as a cover image and immediately introduces the visual character of the selection. The words Featured artist recognise the author highlighted at that moment, while the clickable name leads directly to the artist’s profile. Because the cover can change over time, the home page remains a living editorial space: it renews its appearance without losing the continuity of the project.

The Archive button will open an editorial menu composed of four entries, providing simple and immediate access to the archive pages of the different sections. It will therefore be more than a reference to the project’s memory: it will act as a map through its selections, publications and photographic paths over time. The smaller Live ↗ link, by contrast, leads to the community’s real-time stream. Two different times coexist in the header: the archive, which orders and preserves, and Live, which tells the story of what is happening now.

Submit Your Photo opens the path for submitting a photograph. It is the transition from observation to participation: the author presents a work to the editorial system.

Guidelines leads to the rules. Its position beside the two principal invitations is significant: participation is not merely a matter of uploading an image, but of entering a context shaped by shared criteria and responsibilities.

The first pair comes from ART Gallery, the section devoted to works that have entered the editorial selection. The second pair leads to Latest Publications, the stream of the most recently published photographs. This alternation allows the home page to place two moments in dialogue: images already recognised within the curatorial path and new works that continually feed and renew the platform.

After these first four works, the other photographs shown on the home page are managed by the portal’s artificial intelligence. Their appearance changes over time: the system selects them dynamically and partly at random from the different sections, also taking into account the visibility and interest recorded at that moment. The selection is not limited to recent content. AI can return photographs published much earlier to the foreground, giving them another opportunity to be seen, voted for and discovered. The archive therefore does not remain still; it continues to generate encounters between works, authors and audiences.

Each photograph can be clicked to open its own page. The name beneath it leads to the author’s profile. The heart and its number form the voting or appreciation control and display the current count. The small i / Notes + control opens an editorial note about the image: an additional level of interpretation designed to accompany the viewing experience without burdening the composition.

Between the two sequences appears Visual FLOW →, a members-only section designed to make participation faster and more immediate. The photographs shown in the Flow come from works submitted within the community and are gathered into a rapid viewing path. They appear through a succession of pop-up windows: without interrupting the visual narrative, members can vote, comment and move directly to the next image. Visual FLOW also makes it possible to create editorial covers quickly, transforming a photographic selection into a composition ready for a new presentation. The Info → button summarises how it works without requiring visitors to leave the home page.

These six images should not be confused with photographs already admitted to the editorial gallery: they represent the participatory stage that may precede a new selection. The home page draws them from the voting area and brings them to the foreground, making it possible to express a preference without losing the thread of the page.

A second invitation appears in the “Vote for ART Gallery” window. At the time of this review, its three previews led to their respective Latest Publications pages: they therefore come from the platform’s publication stream and are presented again as an invitation to discover new works before entering the complete voting section. The Vote now → button leads to that area; if the window is closed, a small control allows it to be reopened. These photographs are also internal ARTFreeLife content, not external advertising images.

Most Viewed, beneath the label Real-Time Highlights, leads to the photographs receiving the most views at that moment: a measure of the audience’s current attention.

Vote for Art Gallery, introduced by Choose Your Favourite Photo, leads to the active selection of a preferred work.

Live, beneath Real-Time Community, opens what is happening now. Together, the three cards summarise the home page’s ecosystem: visibility, participation and presence.

The top bar remains fixed and provides quick access to photo submission, the author’s own name, which links directly to the personal profile, member search and, when the user is signed in, messages and sign-out. The three-line button opens the general navigation menu; the ARTFreeLife mark returns to the home page.

At the bottom are social links to Instagram, Facebook and X, together with the arrow that returns to the first photographs. Service functions follow: reporting an issue, the privacy policy, terms of use, and privacy and cookie settings.

The mobile home page will display a stream of ten photographs per page. The path will begin with Latest Publications, continue with Featured images and arrive at works selected for ART Gallery. It will therefore not be an arbitrary sequence, but a journey capable of guiding visitors from the platform’s present activity to photographs that have received editorial recognition.

Each photograph can be experienced directly from the home page. Immediately beneath the image, visitors will be able to write a comment and join the conversation without interrupting the stream. The same work can be shared and voted for, bringing observation and participation together in a single space.

The + symbol will have a simple and recognisable purpose: it will allow members to submit a new photograph. It will become the immediate point of access for anyone wishing to move from viewing the work of others to presenting their own.

On the smaller screen, photographs will no longer be arranged as double-page spreads but will appear one after another. The author’s name will always accompany the work, while the essential controls will remain close to the image and within easy reach of the thumb. Navigation will become more compact, leaving the largest possible area of the screen to the photograph.

The relationship between the different areas will also become more natural: new publications will describe what is happening now, Featured will bring deserving images to the foreground, and ART Gallery will lead towards the more explicitly curatorial selection. Ten photographs at a time will provide a clear measure for reading, preventing the stream from becoming indistinct or dispersive.
