Vasile est né dans cette maison, et c'est là qu'il est mort.
Le lit près de la fenêtre, le sol en terre battue.
Rien n'avait bougé.

Il n'avait jamais quitté. Pas pour fuir, pas pour chercher mieux il n'en avait pas eu envie, ou peut-être que la question ne s'était jamais posée. Il parlait peu. Le bois, le pain, la lumière. Il faisait ce qu'il y avait à faire.

Iliana s'occupait du reste. Un petit jardin, des pommes de terre, des poules, une vache, un chien qui ne laissait rien passer. Elle levait les yeux pour saluer, puis reprenait son geste.

Je suis revenu les voir chaque fois que j'étais au Maramureș. Pas pour les photographes à tout prix pour être là, simplement. Un lait chaud, une assiette posée devant moi.

Et puis un jour, Vasile est parti.

La maison ne semblait pas vide. Mais quelque chose avait changé de place difficile à dire quoi exactement.
